Effect of Puerariae Radix on Hippocampal Neurons in Ischemic Damaged Rats

Abstract
|
|
|
Objective : This study investigated a neuroprotective effect of herariae Radix on cerebral ischemia.
Method : The global cerebral ischemia was induced by bilateral common carotid arteries occlusion under hypotension (40 mmHg) in Sprague-Dawley rats. After the treatment of Puerariae Radix extract, changes of the pyramidal neurons in CAl region of the hippocampus were observed histologically.
Results :l. The significant decrease of numbers of pyramidal neurons in CA1 region of the hippocampus resulted by cerebral ischemia. Then herariae Radix treatment demonstrated significant increase of numbers of pyramidal neurons in CA1 region as compared with control group.
2. The significant decrease of pyramidal layer thickness in CA1 region of the hippocampus resulted by cerebral ischemia. Then herariae Radix treatment demonstrated significant increase of pyramidal layer thickness in CAI region as compared with control group.
Conclusion : These results suggested that Puerariae Radix reveals the neuroprotective effect through the control of noxious stress stimulations to neurons.
